Reel Reviews
Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 6, 2026
Reel Reviews is operated by Appsketiers ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. If you have any questions, email us at omargreen@me.com.
Information you give us
- Account — your email address and a password. Your password is stored only as a secure hash; we never store or see it in plain text. We send a one-time code to your email address to verify your account, and use it for password resets and security alerts.
- Profile — a display name, plus an optional bio, profile photo, and a free-text location label (for example a city) that you choose to enter. Profile photos are stored in our backend's file storage.
- Your activity — movie logs and watch status, ratings and reviews, watchlists, collections and curator notes, discussion posts, comments, likes, reshares, and direct messages you exchange with other users (including read status).
- Social and safety — accounts you follow or block, content reports and appeals you submit, and moderator applications if you apply to be a moderator.
- Preferences — taste preferences (genres, eras, languages, content ratings), recommendation feedback (thumbs up / down / not interested), notification and email preferences, privacy settings, and theaters you save as favorites.
- Search history — your recent searches are stored with your account so the search screen can show them.
Information collected automatically
- Push token — if you allow notifications, a device push token (an Expo push token) and your device platform are stored so notifications can be delivered to your device.
- Email delivery records — when we send you an email, we record the address, the purpose (for example a password reset), and whether delivery succeeded.
- Subscription status — if you purchase a subscription, we store your subscription status, entitlement, and the payment provider's customer identifiers. We never receive or store your full payment card details.
Location (theater showtimes)
Location is used only by the theater showtimes feature, and only while you are using it. You can grant foreground location permission, or type a city, ZIP code, or address instead — typed locations are converted to coordinates on your device.
Your coordinates are sent to our backend to find nearby theaters, and are forwarded together with the movie and date to our showtimes provider. On our servers, your coordinates are rounded to roughly a one-kilometer grid and used only as part of a short-lived, shared cache key so nearby users can share one lookup. We do not keep a per-user location history, and the app never accesses your location in the background.
If you save a theater as a favorite, we store that theater's name, address, and coordinates — the theater's location, not yours.
How we use your information
- To provide the service: your feed, profile, reviews, lists, discussions, messages, and showtimes.
- To personalize recommendations, generated from your logs, ratings, and preferences using on-server heuristics and, where configured, an AI model (see the next section).
- To send push notifications and emails according to your preferences.
- To moderate content, enforce our Terms of Use, and keep the community safe.
- To secure your account: email verification, password resets, and security alerts.
Who your content is visible to
Other users can see the content your privacy settings allow. You control your default visibility (public, friends, or private), per-post visibility, who can message you, and you can block individual accounts at any time.
Service providers
We share data only with the providers needed to run the app:
- Convex — our backend platform; it hosts our database, server functions, and file storage. The information described above is stored there.
- TMDB (The Movie Database) — movie search and metadata. Your search text is forwarded to TMDB to find movies and responses may be cached on our backend. No account information is sent to TMDB.
- International Showtimes — theater showtimes lookups. Receives the movie's title or catalog identifier, the date, and your approximate coordinates. No account information is sent.
- Resend — delivers our emails (verification codes, password resets, security alerts, and optional activity digests).
- Expo — delivers push notifications using your device push token.
- OpenAI — where AI recommendations are enabled, we send your favorite genres and the titles of films you rated highly, plus a list of candidate movie titles, to rank suggestions. No name, email address, or account identifier is included.
- Apple and RevenueCat — if you purchase a subscription, payment is processed by Apple and your subscription status is managed through RevenueCat.
- Stripe — payment processing for any purchases made outside the app, where offered.
We do not sell your personal information, and the app contains no advertising or third-party ad tracking. We may disclose information where required by law or to protect the safety of our users.
Data retention and deletion
Your account data and content are kept while your account is active or until you remove them in the app. You can delete your account at any time at Settings → Account → Delete account, which removes your account and its data from the service.
Server caches (such as movie search and showtime lookups) expire automatically. Email delivery records and moderation records may be retained as needed for security, abuse prevention, and legal compliance.
Your choices
- Edit or remove your profile details, and control activity visibility and message privacy in Settings → Privacy.
- Turn push notifications on or off in the app and in your device's system settings.
- Manage email preferences in Settings → Notifications, or use the unsubscribe link included in non-security emails.
- Block accounts and report content from anywhere in the app.
- Delete your account at Settings → Account → Delete account.
Children
Reel Reviews is intended for users aged 17 and older and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, passwords are stored only as secure hashes, and access to production systems is limited. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. The date at the top shows the latest revision, and material changes will be announced in the app or by email.
